Not a chance.If we are honest the humidor is possibly the one piece of home decoration the cigar smoker can get genuinely excited about – different exotic woods, aged leather and various polished finishes – there is nothing more satisfying than opening a well stocked humidor and smelling sweet tobacco leaf and cedar. One of the more unusual offerings on the market at the moment comes from CigarsUnlimited: the Heritage range. All the models have been handcrafted from a single, 800 year old English Oak recently felled in Gloucestershire. The intensity and dark lustre of this superb oak burl has an innate appeal and quality and is available in 50, 75 and 200 cigar size. The current thinking is to take any cigars out of cellophane and tubes when they go in the humidor. But with boxes the advice is to leave them in the box so there is no cross fertilisation of flavours. Essentially the idea of a humidor is to create the humidity of the country where your cigar was rolled. The expense of shelling out on a 50 cigar humidor, one of the most popular sizes, at about £80 will probably be a sound investment in the long run. Hand-made cigars should be kept in a humidified environment: ideally 16- 18ºC and 65-70 per cent humidity.
