Plumbing 'the Depths'James Leavey goes in search of the finest cigars from HondurasOnce upon a time when you asked for a Honduran cigar in Britain you meant Don Tomas as that was all there was available.But in recent years the quality of Honduran cigars has reached even greater heights and a wider choice of luxury brands, especially those produced by Rocky Patel, General Cigars, Puros Indios and the Toraño family, has started to reach the United Kingdom. Such is Honduras’s reputation for producing quality Cuban seed and Connecticut seed tobaccos, both full bodied, usually with a strong, spicy flavour and heady aroma that over the last three decades it has metamorphosed into one of the world’s leading tobacco and cigar producing countries. Honduras is said to export more than 85 million cigars worldwide each year, and is now the second-largest exporter of cigars to the United States. The Republic of Honduras is the second largest of the Central American countries, bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the east and south by Nicaragua, on the southwest by El Salvador and the Pacific Ocean, and on the west by Guatemala. Tegucigalpa is its capital and chief commercial centre and is about 92 kilometres from Danli, where you will find most of the country’s cigar factories. The restored Mayan ruins of Copán in the west, first discovered by the Spaniards in 1576 and rediscovered in dense jungle in 1839, reflect the great Mayan culture that arose in the region in the fourth century.
