Our man investigates…Indonesia’s great gifts to the pleasure of smoking are not only the much sought after tobacco leaves of Deli on Sumatra and Besuki on Java, but also the recipe of cloves mixed in with tobacco to give a unique and exotic aroma when smoked.The clove laced cigarette is known as kretek, so called after the crackling sound of cloves within; and it’s unique to Indonesia. And it is now conquering the world. Indonesia’s premier kretek manufacturer PT Djarum has gone one step further by developing a cigarillo that combines the best of Indonesia’s cigar heritage and kretek, appropriately named Spice Islands. Its agent Davidoff has now launched it in the United Kingdom, while Djarum has also launched Spice Islands in all major markets of mainland Europe and North America. The link up between Djarum and Davidoff is not confined to the UK only. The link-up between Djarum and Davidoff with its extensive interests in the Dominican Republic and neighbouring parts of the Caribbean and Meso America has brought together the West and the East Indies, two of the world’s major centres for tobacco plantations and cigar making.
