What a corker!

In the latest of our series of cigar and drinks marriages, we pit every landmark moment’s friend Champagne against some great cigars

Whether it’s being broken over the bows of a new ship, popped open at major landmark celebrations or even just as a high end uber premium bling, Champagne is seen as the first call drink for those special moments in life.

Cigars too are often bought as celebratory items, the new father, the new husband and other major events.

Cigar Buyer decided to put to the test four Champagnes spanning the cost range from the £19.99 Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top up to the heavy weight Dom Ruinart Rose at £135.

In the middle ground sat Absolutely Fabulous favourite Bollinger Special at £32.99 and Dom Perignon at £80.

In the cigar corner, three magnificent coronas from Davidoff, Hunters and Frankau and Macanudo lined up representing the broad church of handmade premium cigars.

So as you can imagine the task facing the judges of finding the best combination was a fairly daunting one.

The judging panel was made up of some of the industry’s finest cigar brains and a couple of Champagne connoisseurs to keep the panel on track with the bubbly stuff.

A private dining room at Boisdales Restaurant in London provided the perfect tasting room, and the tasting was done blind to give a level playing field for all concerned.

With a possible 15 different combinations the judging panel really had their work cut out to make a decision. And it was a tough competition with the cigars performing admirably with the Champagnes.

Indeed there was not much in it at the top. The winning combination, pipping i.....
