A slice of paradise

It has often been said that happiness is a good cigar.

Well if results from a recent survey for Cuba and the Dominican Republic are to be believed, it would seem there is some truth in the adage.

The 178-nation ‘Happy Planet Index’ lists the cigar producing nation of Dominica as the fourth happiest nation on the planet and Cuba as the sixth, while the United Kingdom is ranked 108th.

The index is based on consumption levels, life expectancy and happiness, rather than national economic wealth measurements such as gross domestic product.

The study was compiled by think-tank the New Economics Foundation (Nef).

Latin American nations dominate the top 10 places, while African and Eastern European nations fill most of the bottom 10.
