Rob Allanson reportsIt is a classic silver screen moment.Eastwood squints into the sun, bites the end off his cheroot spitting out the cap, then reaches for his six shooter and puts a hole in the baddy. A great way to look macho but, let’s face it, not the best way to cut your favourite cigar. First of all it is hard to see what you are doing. Secondly your teeth are not as sharp as the blade on a cutter. And finally, you end up with unsightly clumps of tobacco between your teeth. Thankfully the days of biting the end off cigars are nearly over. There are some people out there who still do it, but with a wide selection of cutters on the market there really is no need. Cigar cutting has become less macho but definitely more elegant, and smokers now have the perfect excuse to buy what are some very cool and smart looking essential gadgets. Let’s face it the better, and probably more expensive, the cigar you smoke, the more care you are going to take cutting it. There is nothing worse than looking forward to a classic cigar only to have it totally ruined with a bad cut. The object of the cut is to create an ample, smooth aperture for smoking without damaging the cigar’s structure. Most of the time this means cutting away the cap, or flag leaf, that closes the cigar, but leaving just enough to hold the wrapper leaves together.
