Ninety not out... Stanford NewmanStanford Newman is a legend of the cigar world, having been involved with it for 70 years. Rob Allanson spoke to himHe has been in the hot seat of the American cigar industry for more than 70 years, seen cigar booms and busts and despite his advancing years still keeps an active and tight rein on his company.A true legend in the cigar world, Stanford Newman celebrates his 90th birthday this June, and true to form has no intention of giving up his work and passion just yet. The proud patriarch of the United States’ oldest cigar family, he first started working for his father during his school holidays in the 1930s. Perhaps it is the glorious Florida climate, where the J.C Newman headquarters is based, that keeps this sprightly, tenacious nonagenarian going, but Stanford puts it down to his regular health regime – something a man half his age would be proud of. “My daily routine keeps me going,” he says. “Three days a week I go on a treadmill for 30 minutes. I also spend an hour with a personal trainer. “I take good care of myself and have to continue to do so and not stop. “In the afternoons I spend my time in the factory and office to exercise my brain. There is always a problem to solve and this also keeps me going. “About 10 years ago I told my doctors that if I kept going for another 10 years I would throw a party for them. So the celebration this year is also in honour of my doctors who have kept me going.” Stanford recalls the family history in his book.
