James Leavey reportsMany premium cigars today use wrappers grown in Ecuador, where the volcanic soil is among the most fertile substances in the world and ideal for growing consistently good wrapper leaf.That’s why you’ll often see the wrapper type listed as ‘Ecuadorian Connecticut’, ‘Ecuadorian Sumatra’ or ‘Ecuadorian Cuba.’ This means they’ve used a Connecticut, Sumatra, or Cuban seed variety, depending on the blend, and grown it in Ecuador instead of in its native soil. The results, as most of the world’s cigar retailers know, have usually been excellent. Ecuador produces large quantities of high quality tobacco, both filler and wrapper, shade and sun grown; and growers there have long been using Connecticut and Sumatra seed varieties. “In each case, the tobacco usually seems milder and less robust in strength and flavour than the originals,” said Hendrik Kelner, chief executive officer of Tabadom Holding, Inc.; OK Cigar Corporation; Occidental Cigars Corporation; Procesadora de Tabaco Palmarejo; and Corporation Zona Franca Palmarejo S.A.; and Cidav Corporation; all of which are based in the Dominican Republic. “Its wrapper colours fall between Connecticut and Cameroon, and its silky texture has visual appeal.” The Republic of Ecuador is a small equatorial country in northwestern South America between Peru and Columbia with a total area of 109,484 square miles.
