James Leavey reportsScotland’s cigar smokers will soon be lighting up under awnings or in tents in the gardens of pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants when the ban on smoking in enclosed public places in Scotland takes effect, from spring 2006.And the rest of the United Kingdom’s smokers are set to follow suit. Meanwhile, Britain’s tent manufacturers are jumping on the antismoking bandwagon, no doubt encouraged by their counterparts in America, where many of the outdoor puffing havens currently on the market arrive fully assembled, ready for use in minutes with no site assembly required. They can also be custom-built, colour matched to compliment existing surroundings, and made from standing seam, expanded metal, barrel or domed roof designs.
