Ian Buxton reportsWhile the far north-east of England (Tyneside, in particular) was battered by economic recession and the decline of heavy manufacturing industry in the 1980s its neighbours to the south were more fortunate.Though Bradford and Leeds were hit by the decline of the woollen industry and the great mills, a wider spread of industry, prosperous agricultural land and great tourism potential means North Yorkshire remains a desirable and successful part of the world. The region covers one major city in York and a varied range of towns such as Harrogate, Otley and Scarborough. All have distinct local characters and identities, and fascinating histories. And, in these trying times for the cigar trade, one or two determined and quietly up-tempo traders are finding their own way to business success. York, with its long history, ease of access by road and rail and attractive architecture, benefits from a buoyant tourist trade and a strong local economy. Despite this, two retail tobacconists have shut down in recent years, leaving Choice Select, at 6 Coppergate in York as the last dedicated shop in the city.
