Tobacco Legislation WatchSMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACESGOVERNMENT ACTION Smoking in Public Places is being addressed separately by each country within the United Kingdom. The current status is as follows: SCOTLAND The Scottish Parliament passed the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act in 2005 and a total ban on smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces will come into force at 6am on Sunday 26th March 2006. This includes all pubs, bars, restaurants and specialist tobacconists. Smoking will only be permitted outdoors and in residential premises, which can include hotel bedrooms specified by the proprietor. NORTHERN IRELAND In October 2005 it was confirmed that a total ban on smoking in public places and workplaces, similar to the Scottish ban, will be introduced in the Province in April 2007. WALES The Welsh Assembly has already voted in favour of a total ban, but at this stage it does not have the powers to introduce it. Additional powers will be given to the Assembly under Government of Wales Act (Amendment) Bill during this Parliament, so it may choose to implement its own ban. On the other hand, Wales may choose to follow England when the position there is known. ENGLAND After intense debate at the highest levels of government, the Health Bill was introduced to Parliament on 27th October 2005, and is expected to become law in Summer 2007.
