Edward Sahakian has spent 25 years promoting fine cigars. Rob Allanson met him
Stepping in to Davidoff’s London shop, not far from the madding crowds of Piccadilly Circus, is like stepping into an oasis of marbled calm.
Even before you light up one of the eponymous smokes, you can feel life slowing down to a different pace.
This is exactly what Edward Sahakian envisaged 25 years ago when he joined what for him was a new business, after fleeing from Iran.
Cigars are not just a profession for this gentleman’s gentleman who radiates a certain elegance and peace, but above all are his passion.
The customer can sense this as soon as entering the very bright and spacious shop, at the heart of which is a big walk-in humidor with everything to offer. All of the best can be found here, including the 61-year-old’s encyclopedia knowledge, which is second to none in the industry.
Edward and his employees consider it important that the customers leave satisfied with their smoking pleasure.
“The concept was, and still is, to offer smokers anything they need to make their life more pleasant, from cigars to humidors, to cutters and lighters, and everything else related,” he says.
“We even sell umbrellas. There is a tradition of tobacconists selling these, as if you go for a walk and it rains it keeps your cigar dry.
“The shop was my dream come true. Not that many people can claim their hobby has become their trade. I feel very fortunate and it is a special trade to be involved in.
