Spain protects its workers

Spain has become the latest European Union country to introduce a smoking ban in the workplace in a bid to improve public health.

The ban came into effect this year, the new law bans smoking in offices, shops, schools, hospitals, cultural centres and on public transport.

Businesses over a certain size have eight months to set up a separate area for smokers. Smaller premises will also have to indicate whether they are smoke-free.

The Spanish government says the ban is necessary because smoking is the biggest killer in the country, with 50,000 smoking-related deaths annually.

Surveys show that about 30 per cent of Spaniards smoke.

A government-sponsored opinion poll released late last year showed more than 70 per cent of respondents backed the ban.

An existing ban on tobacco advertising on television has also been extended to billboards.

Similar bans have been imposed in Ireland, Italy and Norway.
