Association is piping down

The Pipe and Pipe Tobacco Trade Association has been wound up after more than 40 years.

At a final lunch, held at the Savoy Hotel in London, PPTTA chairman Michael Adler broke the news to members.

He said: “This decision is a result of the current climate in the industry and government legislation, which severely restricts our ability to support pipesmoking as we have done in the past.”

Association memberships had also started to fall prompting a review of whether the body should continue.

Mr Adler added: “The PPTTA, formerly the Pipesmokers’ Council and before that The Pipe Club of Great Britain, has been in existence since the early 60s.

“During the years, many exciting and innovative activities have been undertaken including the world renowned and much imitated Pipesmoker of the Year Awards and World Pipesmoking Championship.”

•At the lunch G. Smith and Sons shop in Charing Cross was awarded the 2006 Pipe Makers Livery Company award.

Shop manager, Jeremy Cole said: “It is a great honour to have won this. My staff and I could not have done this without the support of the shops owners.”
