Brace yourself

The cigar industry is braced for further bad news as governments across the world bow to pressure brought from the anti-smoking lobby.

As we went to press the British Government looked set to change its mind again and revert to the partial smoking option under which smoking would be permitted in members’ clubs and bars which do not serve food.

Details of the proposed new Bill were sketchy but it seems that to avoid a split the Government reverted to the original plan of allowing one enclosed room for smokers, with no bar, food or staff – a move that some say sets the hospitality trade back 50 years or so.

But it seems inevitable that the campaigners for a complete ban would continue to alter the Bill through its passge in to law. They believe that the momentum is with them to ban smoking in enclosed public places completely.

The latest compromise of a ‘smoking carriage’ was in the Government’s election manifesto, but many believe it is unworkable. The plan has been criticized by trade unions, who argue that bar staff would still inhale smoke if they had to clean the ‘smoking carriages.’
