First Scotland, now Northern Ireland...Acomplete ban of smoking is to be introduced in workplaces in Northern Ireland, including bars and restaurants, from April 2007, the British Government has announced. But Northern Ireland Office Health Minister Shaun Woodward said a decision would still have to be reached on whether the ban would apply in prisons and psychiatric institutions. After an extensive consultation exercise, the minister, who is an exsmoker, said the protection of workers from second-hand smoke was a social justice issue. During the summer, Mr Woodward revealed the results of a public consultation on smoking, which was 91 per cent in favour of a total ban. A smoking ban in all Northern Ireland government departments came into effect in January. The ban sees smoking facilities removed and staff forbidden to light up on site. Since March 2004, smoking has been illegal in workplaces, including pubs and restaurants in the Republic of Ireland – the first country in the world to introduce such a nationwide ban.
