What’s happening in the world of cigar ashtrays

Something that is not immediately obvious to the novice cigar smoker is that a long cigar needs a longer than average ashtray, otherwise the cigar may overbalance and dislodge its residue over everything else aside from the receptacle designed to accommodate it. And the serious cigar smoker surely needs at least one decent ashtray in every room of every home they own...

Fortunately there are many finely designed ashtrays now available that will match any décor, including the classic Dalvey solo cigar ashtray (rrp £40), designed by cigar smokers, for the cigar smoker.

Elegantly masculine, its functional twist lets the cigar rest horizontally in its enamelled cradle ensuring the cigar burns evenly.

Dalvey’s rather snazzy, polished stainless steel pocket ashtray (rrp £45) resembles a small pocket watch – the spring lid opens to the press of a button – and would not look out of place at the finest social gathering.

So when a smoker’s host, in response to a request to ignite your favourite cigar, says, “oh, of course, but I don’t know if we’ve got an ashtray,” he can reply, “I’ve got one of my own.” That said, there are some hosts who don’t like smoking but permit their guests to do so. Hosts are no longer obliged to provide cigars or cigarettes for guests (although I would argue that thoughtful people who can afford to do so will always keep spare tobacco for their friends, relatives and acquaintances) but should have a sufficient number of ashtrays, preferably too many rathe.....
