In the last few years the number of books on smoking seems to have increased in direct proportion to the growing number of bans on adults who like to enjoy their tobacco in public.

One day, no doubt, the anti-smokers will extend their virulent puritanism to the written word, so maybe you should encourage your customers to buy some if not all of the following nicotine-friendly titles before that sad day dawns.

If they haven’t already got a copy of Simon Chase’s magnum opus, The Complete Guide for Habanos Enthusiasts (Habanos, via Hunters & Frankau) then their smoker-friendly library is not complete, for Chase’s guide is probably the best researched and the most authoritative, and includes the official Habanos ring gauge guide.

Right next to it on the shelf I’d place Min Ron Nee’s massive An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars (Interpro Business Corporation, via Hunters & Frankau), because it is full of invaluable information and personal insight. It’s a great read, and endearingly off-the-wall. For example, “Balance... A term used to describe one of the many virtues of a good cigar. The term is understood by everyone who knows how to appreciate a fine cigar. But very few people can pinpoint exactly what it means...
