Ian Buxton looks at the cigar business in Manchester

Think of Manchester and what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Coronation Street, perhaps, or scenes of industrial decay?

Well, Manchester United may have been in the headlines recently and L S Lowry may have painted those flat caps and terraced houses, but awardwinning architecture and designer shopping is very much the image that Manchester is keen to present.

Lowry’s paintings are now housed in a purpose-built gallery that’s just part of the cutting-edge cultural scene in today’s city.

Home to companies such as BUPA, Orange, BNFL Engineering and Barclaycall, the continued growth of the city centre and other business areas, such as East Manchester, combined with Manchester’s growing position as a centre for the knowledge and information industry (with its huge new University of Manchester and expanding hospital) is creating major employment opportunities for residents and attracting skilled people to live and work in the area. And, as we shall see, enjoyment of fine cigars follows from this success.

Rising like a phoenix from the ashes of Salford Docks, the Quays area is a mixture of upmarket luxury penthouses, industry and The Lowry arts complex, winner of the Building of the Year Award 2001. Worldrenowned architect Daniel Liebeskind designed the Imperial War Museum North which is attracting an international audience, as well as enthusiastic locals.

Ambitious plans have been announced to give Manchester's Royal Exchange shopping centre a multimillion pound makeove.....
