From the editorWhere does the time go? I find it remarkable that a year has gone by since I was listening to the great Freddie Truman recounting tales of cricket tours in India at the Association of Independent Tobacco Sellers annual exhibition dinner. But here we are, the football season underway, the end of summer in sight and the prospect of pre-Christmas trading just round the corner. So how are we standing up? Are we looking forward optimistically or are we letting the seemingly constant stream of negativity get to us? It really does seem that the trickling effect of the anti smoking movement has grown in to a raging torrent in the last 12 months. So much so that most of us now accept that a ban in public places in the United Kingdom is almost inevitable at some point in the not too distant future. That bad news is compounded by the fact that if there are to be any concessions they will be in areas where no food is being prepared – and the after dinner cigar at the table is certainly going to be a casualty. But we shouldn’t be throwing in the towel just yet, and there are resons to take heart. A compromise is still possible and indeed, there are signs that the powers that be are prepared to listen to some common sense. It’s imperative that we all stress that there are scores of law-abiding citizens who just want to continue to enjoy one of life’s true luxuries, and that their rights need protecting too. If the ban in food areas is the route the Government adopts then the on trade should be encouraged to go down the cigar lounge route again. These issues aren’t unique to Britain and we can learn from the experiences of people in other countries. In this issue we have spoken to people in the industry from across the world who share our views and problems. It’s been a tough year but we’re not beaten yet. Quality cigars are all about class and sophistication. Let’s work together and show we’re not prepared to be turned in to pariahs just yet.
