James Leavey reportsNicaragua’s cigar producers are noted for being very open to using fine tobacco leaf from a wide variety of sources, including Ecuador, Honduras, Dominican, Brazilian, and even Italy. Which is why they are often able to come up with some really interesting blends.This is not surprising, given the country’s recent turbulent history. For when the ground has shifted beneath your feet due to civil war and natural disasters, you soon learn to be flexible. If you ask any Nicaraguan cigar maker why his or her country’s tobacco has achieved such high status in recent years, they will usually proudly refer to Nicaragua’s rich, jetblack soil and ideal climatic conditions that are said to rival Cuba’s best growing areas. Bordered by Costa Rica on the south and Honduras on the north, Nicaragua is the largest Central American republic. The Pacific Ocean forms her western border, the Caribbean sea the one on the east. Nicaragua has a predominantly tropical climate, alternating between two seasons: rainy and dry (winter and summer). This is the result of its geographic location between 11 and 15 degrees latitude north and the humidity from both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans which give it a fairly stable season. While many consider tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region in Cuba’s province of Pinar de Rio to be the finest in the world, Nicaraguan tobacco – especially from Jalapa Valley and Estelí – has gained a growing following, especially in recent years.
