Caribbean marriageCigars are not the only great export from the Caribbean nations. We have a look at the other staple of life – rumThere has always been a lot to connect rum and cigars, they really have more of a natural affinity with each other than just about any other drinks matching we have done so far.Originally produced as a way of extracting some use from the waste material from sugar cane, rum is made using techniques familiar to the whisky enthusiast, ie adding yeast to the mix to trigger fermentation, distillation in either pot or coffey stills, then maturation in casks. Rum works better with our favourite smokes because of the sweetness and complexity at the heart of the spirit. These qualities are important as they help to cope and complement with the rich multi-layers of tastes of the cigars. When we look at the aromas given off by rum, in the general sense, there are a lot of partners here: cocoa, coffee, caramel, earthy and vegetal notes. Flavours can even remind you of nuts, peppers and spices, possibly even burnt brown sugar. All of which can be found in good rums. In his book Rum, author Dave Broom cites two main rules for choosing a cigar to go with your Caribbean tipple. “Rule number one: Short drinks need short light to medium cigars.” So best to look for something along the lines of a Montecristo Petit Edmundo, or Davidoff Primeros for that swift smoke and drink. If you are intending on a longer session then something slightly larger but still on the shorter side would be appropriate.
