The great and the good of the cigar and tobacco industry will be descending on Nottingham Cricket ground at the end of the month .

The Association of Independent Tobacco Specialists exhibition, held on September 30th and October 1st and 2nd, will be the first one after the smoking ban was introduced.

Don Higgins, Association secretary, said this show had the biggest question mark over it, however the response from the industry had been reasonably favourable with several companies booking stands for first time.

He added: “We are putting a good deal of effort in to promoting the show but it is difficult to say how things will go. We are sending out the catalogue to about 2,000 retailers and so far the feedback has been very good. Most of the big names will be there as well as smaller companies – some exhibiting for the first time.

“We have First Nation coming to the show. This is the first fair trade cigarette on the market. Also crystal company Gleneagles of Edinburgh and Torque Tobacco will be here for the first time.”

At the glitzy awards evening, the Association will be honouring several of its members with prestigious trophies. Last year Roger Merton from Merton and Falcon was awarded the AITS Alan Darbey lifetime achievement award in recognition of his many years service to the tobacco trade.

Also Chris Duckworth Diamonds of Colwyn Bay in North Wales picked up the Peterson Retailer of the Year, and the Hunters and Frankau team scooped the Peter Kelly Supplier of the Year trophy for the first time.
