Not quite the last gaspMore than 250 enthusiastic cigar smokers gave two fingers (holding the first samples of the new Cohiba Maduro sizes – the Genios, Magicos and Secretos) to the smoking ban and intermittent showers at the Hunters & Frankau Summer Cigar Party in London on 5 July 2007.Guests, including Sir Jimmy Savile, sheltered in an open sided marquee in Carlton House Terrace’s garden where they sipped champagne or Mojitos served by the top barman from Kensington’s Bodeguita del Medio restaurant. Cuban musicians played salsa rhythms while the aromatic Havanas enhanced London’s dodgy air. Robert Emery, director of JJ Fox (St James’s) Ltd, was presented with the 2007 Silver Chaveta Award by Hunters & Frankau’s Ana Lopez, who congratulated JJ Fox on their recent investment in a large walk-in humidor at the 19 St James’s Street shop. “Fox’s has been a world-famous Mecca for cigar aficionados for more than a century and now has what must be the largest display of Habanos brands and sizes in the United Kingdom,” said Lopez. “Such a demonstration of confidence in the future is particularly welcome in view of the challenges posed by the smoking ban.” As the guests departed, there was just one question on their lips, “When is the next outdoor cigar party?” By Rob Allanson Section : News Page number : 5 This article is 17 months old and some information provided may be time sensitive.
