From the EditorWell the changes have certainly been rung since I last sat down to write my column and frankly stand outside to have a cigar. It seems too be a little to early to tell what the long term effects will be of the smoking ban will have on retailers, but certainly there was a little drop in sales – this could also have been down to the fairly pathetic weather we have been having of late. If we have an Indian summer – however how often does it ever really appear – there will definitely be a final chance to smoke outside on those lazy evenings. I spent a wonderful evening at the Savoy hotel a while ago with the great and the good of the industry to mark the introduction of the ban. This last hurrah was a superb galvanising of the industry with some more than supportive words from some celebrity cigar smokers. Top chef Anthony Worral Thompson vowed he would not be putting up no smoking signs as there were too many signs in the world already. Newspaper man and media type Andrew O’Neill also railed against he Government’s decision claiming that Whitehall no longer wanted people to have fun. The message was that despite the ban we still have to be able to enjoy the liberty of smoking a good cigar. Whether this is in the comfort of our homes or in an outdoor smoking area is our choice and enough is enough from the anti-smoking lobby. I recently had the pleasure of taking a trip up to Berwick with Edinburgh-based Ian Macleod, an independent whisky company, to select its next cigar malt. The first version had gone down with smokers so well it was time for another bottling aimed at cigar lovers. It was just before the ban came in in England, hence the Scots crossing the border to smoke. There were some excellent cigars to play with from the Continent and the standard of whisky was as high as you could expect from a company like Ian Macleod. The task, as you can imagine, was a pretty daunting. We sat down with four cigars and a starting list of about 10 different whiskies to work though. Soon the chosen whisky will hit the shelves, and believe me it does work very well with certain cigars for sure.
