Tobacco Legislation WatchAPRIL 2007SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES Smoking in Public Places is being addressed separately by each country within the United Kingdom. The current status is as follows: ENGLAND The Smoke-free Regulations under the 2006 Health Act have been published, and the measures will be introduced on 1st July 2007 with the following key exemptions: Private accommodation, Accommodation for hotel guests and club members, Other residential accommodation, Specialist tobacconists, Research and testing facilities Private vehicles The Department of Health has published guidance which explains in detail how the new Smoke-free Law will operate. For information please visit the following website: www.smokefreeengland.co.uk SCOTLAND A total ban on smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces, including all pubs, bars, restaurants and specialist tobacconists, came into effect on 26th March 2006. Smoking is only permitted outdoors and in residential premises, which can include hotel bedrooms specified by the proprietor.
