All in good tasteThere is nothing quite like relaxing with friends and a good cigar. The latest Hunters & Frankau’s Cigar Smokers’ Club tasting was no exception.When you talk to people about a cigar club dinner they get images of smoke filled rooms with old boys drinking port and talking about the good old days of the empire.However the recent Smokers’ Club dinner blew this staid image out of the water. Held at the trendy Amuse Bouche bar, a champagne bar in Fulham, London, the evening also contained a few surprises for the 40 cigar enthusiasts who attended. The guests were put to the test with a blind tasting of three unbanded Corona Gordas size Habanos (5 5/8ins x 46 ring gauge) during the evening. To make it slightly easier, but not much, each smoker was given a form which had the names of eight possible cigars to chose from. First to tease the enthusiasts was the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.1, considered a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity. The next smoke to confound smokers was the Punch Punch, a delightful cigar with a distinct medium flavour created by a blend of tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region. The final cigar to test the club was the iconic Cohiba Siglo IV. The medium strength Siglo IV was a new size launched in 2002. Uniquely two of Cohiba’s filler leaves, the seco and ligero, undergo a third fermentation in barrels, which adds smoothness to the blend. One smoker rose above the rest to guess all three.
