From the EditorSo here you are, my first column taking over at Cigar Buyer, and what a time to take the reins.Imminent legislation looming on the horizon for England and Wales, Scotland already deep in the grip of a smoking ban, and what can I tell you about the industry at the moment? One thing is for certain, there are people out there who are not content, to borrow a phrase from someone else, to go quietly in to the dark night. These people are battling for our very rights to sit and enjoy something that is one of the true indulgencies of life. There are cigar smokers out there who are simply not prepared to be legislated against, especially in a climate where a person’s freedom to choose is becoming increasingly limited. Now I am not saying we should be out there blowing smoke in the faces of nonsmokers. As cigar smokers we are ambassadors for our fellow kind so choice and consideration should be our watch words, and not tit for tat tactics. This is really the key to educating the general public in the face of such near overwhelming opposition. But apart from these dark clouds the cigar industry is still one of the friendliest to work in and people have a genuine passion for their products. The amount of retailers and aficionados out there who have such an encyclopaedic knowledge of the cigar world is truly a joy to be a part of. This is how to keep the cigar smoking public happy, by recommending new products and even trying a different brand to usual, the customer will be happy and stimulated and back for more. My own education in cigars is still on going. There are some fantastic tutors out there who have been good enough to share their expertise with me and I hope they will continue to do so. We have a great product with a heritage that any brand would be proud of, and I hope that this enthusiasm comes through in the direction this publication goes in. I want to bring you the best cigars in our tastings section, stories and features that will keep you inspired and above all reflect the passion that I find in the industry. So now I have set out my stall, and it complies with the smoke-free regulations on not being ‘substantially enclosed’, why not pull up a chair and join me for a smoke or two.
