This issue James Leavey discovers why the Dominican Republic has won such respectTobacco-loving travellers to the Dominican Republic are often surprised to see what appear to be their favourite brand of hand-rolled Havanas, such as Partagas, Romeo y Julieta, or H Upmann, on sale there. A close inspection will show these cigars are all locally made, although the packaging and labelling is almost identical to the Cuban brands.Not that you should ignore these cigars, or other Dominican brands, for many have long been getting equal and sometimes higher marks than their Cuban counterparts in the world’s leading cigar magazines and cigar websites. Certainly most of them deserve a far more prominent place in the UK premium cigar retail market. Oddly enough, it was the mass emigration from Santo Domingo to Cuba in the 18th and 19th centuries that could be said to have kick-started Havanas. For many of the Dominican emigrants took their tools of the trade with them, including their farmed tobacco seeds. History repeated itself just after the Cuban Revolution of 1959, when the Cuban owners of some of the original Havana trademarks decided to up roots and introduce their Cuban tobacco seeds into other tobacco growing countries, including the Dominican Republic. This enabled them to carry on producing premium cigars, albeit with different tobacco, for export to the United States and a growing number of other countries, including the UK.
